nat-2™ Ocean Line

nat-2™ has created a super luxurious and sustainable line of fish leather sneakers. The fish leather from salmon and wolffish used comes from Iceland where the skins are collected from the waste disposals of local fishers. If it does not get tanned it gets burned or thrown back to the sea, which would be a pity as fish leather is among the strongest most elite materials provided by nature. The sneakers are hand produced entirely by artisans in Italy and all other  used materials such as finest leather, glass, real cork and rubber outsoles come directly form the closer region in Italy.

Pioneering force in the middle of Iceland!

Our partner Icelandic tannery is leading in fishleather and produces from four different species of fish; Salmon, perch, wolffish and cod – each with its own unique characteristics –  in a diverse range of colours, textures and finishes. It is stationed in a small but vibrant community of roughly 3000 inhabitants, located in the heart of  Iceland. The idea of fish leather itself is rooted in tradition whereas centuries ago Icelanders wore shoes made of wolffish skin.

“The fish leather is environmentally friendly in two different ways: it is a bi-product of the fishing industry, utilising raw material that would not otherwise be used; and the production process makes use of renewable hydro and geothermal energy.”

The tannery is only one in the world that makes wolffish leather, and it is also the only tannery in the world that has successfully developed a way to make washable salmon leather. Being stronger than regular leather due to the alignment of fibers within the leather, it can serve purpose in everything from jewelry to handbag to panels! The sky is the limit when it comes to creating new platforms for functionality in fish leather!

“We strive for sustainability, and we pride ourselves in the fact that all products going through our factory – whether it being from fish, lamb, horse or other animal – is all a bi-product from other industries such as agricultural industries or the food industry.

No animal is killed with the sole purpose of collecting its skin on our premises!

SALMON LEATHER TAKES COLOUR WELL SO THE HUES ARE BRIGHT AND EVEN WHILE THE RANGE OF COLOURS IS BROAD AND SUBTLE. THE LEATHER CAN EVEN BE PRODUCED IN A BRIGHT WHITE!

Length and width: Hides of salmon are 60 to 65 cm long and 8 to 12 cm at the widest point.

Size: Sizes are measured in square feet. The average size is 0.8 square feet.

Thickness: Average 0.6 mm

Tear strength: 90 Newtons

Heat resistance:
Normal: 90 – 100°
NAC: 60° C

Two different color bases: Two different processing methods- normal and NAC- produce two very different color bases – the color base is a crucial factor in the dyeing process. In addition to these two color bases, we offer both washable salmon leather and vegetable tanned salmon leather, for description on each method scroll down.

Normal (Solid color effect, without contrasts). The natural grey base color is removed, and this enables us to achieve bright colors, even pure white. In this case the colour of the salmon leather is solid, without its natural two-tone effect of back and belly, and the scale pattern is less noticeable. This is the method we use most for salmon leather, and so we call it “normal.”

NAC (natural contrast): Through this method, we preserve the natural look of salmon leather which is always two-tone, with a dark back and pale belly. The grey base tone remains, and the scaly texture is more noticeable, especially through the darker parts on the back. For NAC salmon leather, the range of colors is more limited, and the palette is less bright. Pure white, for instance, is not possible.

When working with undyed NAC (product code 910) allowance must be made for seasonal color variations: the salmon is naturally darker in winter than in summer. When NAC leather is dyed this color difference is largely eliminated.

Color: “Normal” salmon leather offers a considerably larger range of colors than our other fish leathers, especially in brighter shades. For NAC salmon leather the color range is more limited.

Texture: Salmon leather offers two main textures: with open scales – a rougher texture – or with closed scales, which is more refined.

Finishes: Both textures (open or closed scales) offer a wide range of different finishes. Atlantic Leather can now offer nearly fifty different finishes.

Origin: Salmon lives wild in the North Atlantic ocean, and returns to Icelandic rivers to breed. Salmon for human consumption is also farmed in sea pens off Iceland, the Faroe Islands, Norway and elsewhere. All the skin of salmon used by Atlantic Leather is sourced from salmon farms in the Nordic countries.

Wolffish Leather

WOLFFISH LEATHER – SMOOTH AND SPOTTED!
THE ONLY FISH LEATHER WITH A SMOOTH SURFACE, WOLFFISH LEATHER HAS A SPOTTED PATTERN THAT LENDS IT A UNIQUE CHARACTER. THE WOLFFISH IS A DEEP SEA FISH – MOSTLY LINGERING AT THE BOTTOM OF THE SEA – CAUGHT FOR FOOD IN THE FISHING GROUNDS AROUND ICELAND. WE ARE PROUD TO BE THE ONLY COMPANY IN THE WORLD THAT MAKES WOLFFISH LEATHER! WOLFFISH HAS TWO STRIKING CHARACTERISTICS, EITHER OF WHICH WOULD MAKE IT UNIQUE: YOU CANNOT MISS THE DARK SPOTTED PATTERN OF THE SKIN, AND WOLFFISH IS ALSO THE ONLY SCALELESS, SMOOTH FISH LEATHER. WHATEVER THE COLOR FINISH, THE SPOTTED PATTERN OF WOLFFISH LEATHER ALWAYS SHINES THROUGH – EXCEPT OF COURSE, IN BLACK.

Length and width: Hides of wolffish are 60 to 70 cm long and 14 to 20 cm at the widest point.

Size: Sizes are measured in square feet. Average size 1.1 square foot.

Thickness: 0.4 to 0.8 mm.

Tear strength: 50 – 60 Newtons

Heat resistance: 70 – 80° C

Colors: Wolffish leather can be colored in a wide range of tones. The very lightest and brightest colors, like those offered for salmon leather, are not available in wolffish leather, and as of yet it is not available in white.

Texture: Unlike salmon, perch and cod, the wolffish skin is not scaly and has a smooth surface.

Finishes: A wide range of finishes are available. Atlantic Leather can now offer nearly fifty different finishes.

Origin: The wolffish is a demersal (deep-sea) species, which is caught for human consumption in the seas off the coast Iceland. Atlantic Leather sources its wolffish skins from Icelandic fishing companies.
